A total of 1692 invidividuals admitted to 4 selected California alcoholism treatment facilities either in 1954 or in 1956-57 were periodically followed up through 1958. The observed death rate in each year of the follow-up was higher than the expected rate. Of 124 deaths in the total sample, six were suicides (all males). The percentage of violent deaths, i.e. accidents & suicides, was more than twice the corresponding percentage in the California resident population. (14 refs.)
