237 patients with bipolar disorder (204 manic & 33 mixed) were rated on 15 classic features of mania & 5 features related to dysphoric mood. Prinicipal components factor analysis was applied to the ratings. 5 clearly interpretable & clinically relevant factors were identified. The first & strongest factor represented dysphoria in mania, with strong positive loadings for depressed mood, lability, guilt, anxiety, & suicidal thoughts & behaviours & a strong negative loading for euphoric mood.
