In this column, Seeley discusses the differences between mental health therapists & hotline volunteers. Seeley states the crisis hotlines are paraprofessional services which when staffed by volunteers should not engage in the diagnosis, laveling or treatment of clients. If a hotline is staffed by professionals in a clinical setting, it is a mental health service performing therapy on the phone. Seeley says the key difference is the discreteness or anonymity of hotlines. (7 refs.)
