This article describes a study of 100 elderly in-patients being treated for depression. Demographics, precipitating events, psychiatric status, physical health & hospital treatment of this group are provided. Two patients died as a result of suicide. Of those that survived, 60% recovered. Male gender & poor physical health were 2 factors which adversely affected recovery. The paper suggests that established methods of treatment are worthwhile for most patients. (20 refs.)
