This study used a stratified sample to gather information about policies & procedures for managing detainees with mental illnesses in 5 sizes of jails. Findings indicate that much emphasis is on screening, evaluation & suicide prevention. Despite numerous barriers, many jails have designed & implemented innovative programs. These programs are divided into 5 core areas so that other jails, using the information provided, can develop a mental health service strategy within their resources.
