630 adults in a Puerto Rican community filled out the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (Spanish translation) during the National Depression Screening Day in October 1993, 1994 & 1995. Responders were oriented regarding the results & clinical implications. The obtained data shows a female preponderance in all samples. Suicidal ideation was reported in 17.8% (1993), 15.5% (1994) & 20.7% (1995) of the sample. Results suggest that this scale can be helpful in the early detection of depression.
