Epidemiological reports often contend that the physician suicide rate is no higher than that of white males in America. The low risk of divorce among physicians has been neglected as a possible suppressor effect in this work. This paper addresses this question using data from 143,885 deaths. The results indicate that when controls are introduced for gender, ethnicity, & marital status, physicians are 2.45 times more likely to die by suicide than the rest of the working population.
