Suicide hotlines are the topic of this chapter. Different studies done to determine problems in the operation of hotlines including poor training of staff, lack of policies & guidelines, and poorly defined roles, are given. A study of the early development of hotlines was undertaken to better understand hotlines’ present role in the community. Problems currently facing hotlines are detailed in terms of their methodologies, training and policies & recommended guidelines. (38 refs.)
