Bipolar disorder in children & adolescents is discussed. Characteristics include faulty logical thinking, hyperactivity and hypersexuality, often leading to substance abuse. Rapidly cycling emotions can occur, with a child happily doing an arts & crafts project, then becoming suicidal & threatening to kill oneself. The neurobiology & psychopharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder is also discussed. (96 refs.)
