Self Harm and Suicide by Detained Persons: a Study (IN: Deaths of Offenders: the Hidden Side of Justice, edited by A Liebling)

This chapter discusses suicides occurring in police custody & a guide published by the Lancashire Constabulary in 1995 to advice police custody staff on how to identify people at risk for suicide. However, the guide was based more on prison experience rather than police custody experience, & thus a project studying suicide in police custody in England & Wales from 1990-4 was undertaken. Several of the report’s recommendations are included.
