This presentation discussed whether any lessons have been learned from deaths in police custody. A report was commissioned in January 1996 to seek greater understanding of what happens when someone dies in custody, how the death is investigated, & when/if a police officer might be suspended from duty following such a death. 22 recommendations resulted; these are briefly outlined & the progress on each is discussed. Recommendation 5 is specific to suicides in custody.
