Changing Perspectives on Deaths of Prisoners (IN: Deaths of Offenders: the Hidden Side of Justice, edited by A Liebling)

In this presentation, Tilt described the scale of the problem faced by the Prison Services with regard to deaths in custody. He then outlined what the Prison Service has achieved in addressing this issue. He concluded with what he believes are the key developments for the future. Tabular data provides the number of suicides in prisons in England & Wales (1983-96), & Northern Ireland & Scotland (1986-96). The key features of a strategy for the prevention of self-injury & suicide are highlighted.
