90 first-episode patients fulfilling ICD-9 criteria for schizophrenia were followed up prospectively for 10 years in a study in Madras, India. Complete assessments were possible on 76 subjects. Predictors of poor course & longer time spent in psychosis were identified. All positive & negative symptoms showed a steep decline at the end of the 10 years. 4 patients had committed suicide during the 10 years between intake & follow-up. (21 refs.)
