Articles on depression leading up to suicide are discussed in this review. Acute & chronic risk factors for suicide are compared. An association between HPA hyperactivity & suicide is discussed. Hopelessness & anhedonia are also mentioned as variables associated with suicide risk, as well as low serotonin & serum cholesterol levels. Finally, the authors present their 4 hypothetical pathways to suicide which incorporate the factors listed above. (71 refs.)
