The mortality of nurses in 27 American states was studied using the National Occupational Mortality Surveillance database. Proportionate mortality ratios adjusted by ethnicity & 5-year age groups were calculated for selected causes of death among female nurses vs. all workers & white-collar workers. Somewhat higher proportionate mortality ratios for suicide were seen in the comparison with all workers than in the white-collar comparison. Findings confirm the results of previous studies.
