To study driver suicides, all motor vehicle fatalities in Finland from 1987-1991 were analysed. 84 cases were examined. 5.9% of all driver fatalities were classified as suicide – the official figure was 2.6%. Driver suicides made up 1.2% of all suicides. 50% of these cases were men aged 15-34 years. Victims had often suffered from life-event stress, mental disorders & alcohol misuse problems. Preventive measures may not significantly reduce suicide mortality but would improve traffic safety.
