A detailed example of one MD’s experience with a man dying from lung cancer is given. This example then branches off into a discussion on the change in opinion on euthanasia between 1970-90 & the poor state of palliative care in the US which leaves many people opting for doctor-assisted suicide. The author suggests that what is important is communication between doctor & patient and that compassionate care is necessary — whether or not it results in doctor-assisted suicide.
