In this article, New Zealand’s high suicide rate (especially among young men) is detailed as well as attempts by the New Zealand government to reduce this rate by increasing funding to mental health promotion. A particularly high suicide rate is that by young male Maoris, which can be attributed to the loss of their family-oriented culture. Mental health programs set up by the government will focus on understanding Maori culture so that programs will be more effective.
