This article reports on an attempt to improve mental health and the suicide rate in Scottish prisons by emphasizing mental health training that nurses who work at these prisons receive. While mental health nurses can identify prisoners at risk, there is always a factor of unpredictability give the stressful jail environment. By spending more time with prisoners, nurses are able to give more accurate diagnoses of prisoners’ mental states with fewer visits.
