This paper discusses suicide prevention in prisons. Research on the prediction of suicide is examined & rates of suicide in Ontario penetentiares for 1981-91 are given. The mentally ill represent a considerable proportion of prison suicides, with schizophrenia & depression carrying an increased risk. Prisons in the region have an active system for identifying those at risk & this institutional response is described.
