A survey of 2,660 Canadian doctors revealed that 2.5% strongly agree to having suicidal thoughts & 7% moderately agree to occasional self-destructive inclinations. 3% of female & 2% of male physicians strongly agree to having suicidal thoughts. 20% of females & 13% of males admitted to suffering from clinical depression. There is no evidence that people entering medicine are more prone to mental illness. The severe stigma of psychiatric illness within the medical profession is discussed.
