Suicide is probably best considered as a multidetermined act. Various risk factors for suicide are described in this article including: being unmarried or unemployed, bereavement, depression, alcoholism, impulsivity, physical illness, & serotonin. Evidence increasingly suggests that genetic factors should be added to the list of risk factors that may predispose an individual to suicide. (6 refs.)
