It is stated in this chapter that the identification of predictors of suicidal ideation may lead to a better understanding of suicidal intent & risk. This understanding could lead to better approaches to prevention, intervention & postvention. Charron (1981) suggested that suicidal ideation is a function of 3 factors, i.e. personal characteristics, negative life experiences, & social support. These are discussed in detail. (60 refs.)
