The case of a 26-year-old male law student who committed suicide in jail is presented in this article. Matthew Cullen had been arrested for drunk driving & made a suicide threat while being questioned. This threat was not taken seriously. A short time after being transferred to jail Cullen hung himself. An investigation revealed that prison policies pertaining to intoxicated inmates & cell checks by officers were not followed. A lawsuit filed by his family was subsequently settled.
