Daigle discusses the use of no-suicide contracts in jail settings. The pitfalls of using this technique are discussed at some length & it is noted that there is no evidence that contracts are effective. Reports so far seem to indicate that they are used mainly to protect the staff. It is suggested that no-suicide contracts should be used only with inmates who are really contemplating suicide & who need short-term supplementary help to get through the crisis period.
