This article begins with a definition of suicidal behaviour & then describes clinical & neurobiological correlates of this behaviour. Common myths regarding causal factors in suicide will be addressed. The relationship of suicide aggression, impulsivity & neurobiology is explored. Reasons for the apparent failure of improved drug treatments to reduce suicide rates are identified. Future directions for research are suggested.
