This study examined whether policies to respond to requests for assisted suicide exist in Dutch psychiatric hospitals & general hospitals with psychiatric wards. Directors of patient care responded to a mail survey. 5 psychiatric hospitals & six general hospitals had written policies. Almost half of the psychiatric hospitals had a verbal policy only. The majority of hospitals with policies had a tolerant or permissive policy toward assisted suicide. (10 refs.)
