The high risk of suicidal behaviours in schizophrenia is discussed. Clinicians need to use a biopsychosocial approach to assessment & intervention. Clinical & social factors which increase the risk of suicidal behaviour are described. Ongoing assessment is deemed to be essential. It is noted that prediction & prevention are not always possible. Treatment focused on the reduction of symptoms & the maintenance of an effective social environment may lessen the risk of suicidal behaviours.
