Profiles of 9 inmates who committed suicde over a 24-month period at a mid-western American jail are detailed. Links between these 9 case studies are discussed to account for the high suicide rate at the facility, including protective custody status of many of the inmates, low staff supervision & poor medical response. As a result, the jail implemented a prevention program, including staff training, increased supervision & modified housing. No additional suicides have occurred. (21 refs.)
