Aspects of second messenger function in the brain of suicide victims & patients with bipolar disorder were evaluated. Inositol & inositol monophosphatase were measured in brain samples from 10 suicide victims, 8 patients with bipolar disorder & 10 normal comparison subjects. Frontal cortex inositol levels of the suicide victims & bipolar patients were significantly less than in the comparison group. Results could suggest a deficiency of second messenger precursor in bipolar patients & suicides.
