Interviews & self-report questionnaires were used to study the history of suicidal thoughts & behaviour, serious noncompliance with a medical regimen, current psychiatric disorder, hopelessness & self-efficacy expectations among 91 diabetic adolescents. The rate of suicidal ideation was higher than expected but the rate of attempts was comparable to that in the general population. Suicidal thoughts were strongly associated with medical noncompliance. (Includes an erratum published in July 1998).
