In this poster session, Jacobs explored the question of whether adoption leads to greater suicide risk in mothers &/or their adopted children. A peak in female suicide rates in Australia coincided with a peak in adoption rates in the late 1960s-early 1970s. This raised the question of a relationship between the loss of a child to adoption & suicide. More research was called for on the mental health consequences of adoption, for mother & child.
