This poster traced the development of the introduction of a single telephone number by The Samaritans in the UK and Ireland. The benefits & limitations of the single number were examined in terms of the greater accessibility of the service & availability of Samaritan volunteers at times of crisis. The impact on public perception of the promotion of the service was evaluated. Tentative conclusions were drawn from information now available about the use made of the service by those who call it.
