Over 90,000 people commit suicide in a year in India but there have been relatively few initiatives towards suicide prevention. This workshop discussed the work of “Sneha”, a voluntary befriending service which was started in Madras & the challenges in establishing a suicide prevention centre in a country where mental health issues are not a priority. Vijayakumar stated that these challenges, difficulties & constraints have only led to innovation.
