Murthy discussed the wide variation in suicide rates & attempted suicide across countries, communities & time. It was noted that life & death are viewed differently in diverse religions & communities. An illustration of these differences can be seen in India where attempted suicide is still punishable by law & in Australia where euthanasia is a legal practice. It is argued that suicide prevention should be rooted in the cultural, social, political & historical realities of the community.
