The association between suicidal thoughts & depression, anxiety disorder, alcohol dependence or abuse & low social functioning was tested in 316 women, age 25-65, in a community setting. The prevalence of suicidal thoughts during the previous year was 6.6%. Independent contributions were made by last year diagnoses of depression & anxiety disorder. An unexpected finding was that alcohol dependence or abuse was not associated with a higher frequency of suicidal thoughts.
