The purpose of this presentation was to clarify the nature of chronic suicide by taking a social constructivist perspective & placing the problem within the profound changes in contemporary society. Rudestam argues that the predominant values of American culture directly contribute to the experience of what Cushman calls the “empty self”, & that this syndrome is related to, among other things, high rates of suicide. The presentation ended with recommendations for interventions.
