Regional differences in the distribution of suicidal acts were investigated in Italy for the period 1980-1994. An unequal regional distribution of suicides & attempted suicides was associated with the unequal regional distribution of wealth with greater changes in richer areas. A hypothesis is proposed to explain the findings. Effective prevention strategies were also discussed.
