Until 1994, attempted suicide was a punishable offence in India. Punishment could include imprisonment & fines. This law was reversed in 1994 by the Supreme Court of India & reinstated in April 1996 by a larger constitutional bench of the Supreme Court. This paper presented the background to the law pertaining to attempted suicide until 1994, the 1994 & 1996 judgements, & the implications of these developments for suicide prevention in India.
