The author discussed changes in the suicide rate in East Germany in relation to political & economic changes following the unification of Germany. In general, it was found that the suicide rates of men & women declined significantly – except for a contradictory trend among males, 50-65 years old. The decline in the suicide rate of women was greater than that for men. Factors contributing to the decline in the suicide rate were discussed.
