The author explored factors which affect sociocultural attitudes towards suicidal behaviour in Lithuania. Historical chronicles, archaeological data, mythology & folklore, & newspaper reports were studied. 3 factors which influence suicidal behaviour are: 1) a tendency to glorify suicide that is particularly predominant during struggles against foreign occupation; 2) a reserved & negative attitude toward suicide that was reinforced by Catholicism; & 3) the state of anomie in the present society.
