Official suicide, accident & undetermined mortality data was obtained for the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England & Wales for 1978-1994. Possible sources of error in the under-reporting of suicide were discussed in this presentation. Choice of method & the relevant literature on this topic was also discussed. The choice of drowning as a method of suicide in the Republic of Ireland was noted as was the increasing accuracy of suicide mortality data for this country.
