Suicides in Police Custody in The Netherlands: the Identification of Potential Suicide Victims (IN: Suicide Prevention: The Global Context. Proceedings of the 19th Congress…, ed. by R J Kosky et al)

In this presentation, the authors discussed whether factors that contribute to suicide risk in the community are also factors in suicide risk in police stations. The characteristics of 20 detainees who committed suicide in police stations in The Netherlands from 1983-1993 are described. These characteristics were then compared to those of the regular police custody population. Further research on risk factors for suicide among those in police custody is called for. (29 refs.)
