148 consecutive suicides in the state of Victoria, Australia were compared to 105 hospitalized suicide attempters & 101 non-hospitalized attempters. It was found that young adult males had the greatest risk of suicide. Almost 90% of those who committed suicide had not asked for help prior to their death. Psychiatric illness was an important background characteristic of completers while relationship problems were more prominent among attempters. A number of recommendations are made. (10 refs.)
