The need for Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) within the correctional community is demonstrated through an officer’s recount of his experience with an inmate’s suicide. He portrays feelings of anger, hurt, guilt & shame and wishes there was a way to sensitize people to the importance of “knowing” when somebody needs help. CISD is used to prevent or mitigate traumatic stress before harmful stress reactions have a chance to damage the lives of personnel responding to emergencies.
