In a letter to an American psychotherapist, an Australian suicide researcher discusses management of suicidal patients. He agrees that the primary task of the therapist is to help suicidal patients developmentally mature by fostering autonomy, promoting self-control, and clarifying potential consequences without imposing values on the patient. The author wonders if doing home visits to at-risk patients who fail to attend appointments is going too far.
