Crisis hotlines are often confused with mental health and social service agencies. This article discusses 6 of 10 issues which determine the discreteness of hotlines. Most concern legal restrictions, service parameters or methodologies. Hotlines differ from mental health and social service agencies in their practice of anonymity and their dependence on technology. There are similarities in their work, such as counseling and the observance of confidentiality.
