High elderly suicide rates in many countries remain a serious problem with social and psychological impacts on survivors. The author predicts a marked increase in the number & percentage of elderly suicides & stresses the need for more incisive preventive action. He recommends training the corpus medicus in the management, correct identification & adequate treatment of elderly psychiatric problems as the best preventive strategy. (12 refs)
