To improve suicide prevention efforts the author calls for scientific investigation into “constant observation” intervention for high suicide risk patients. An important preliminary study by Rebecca Cardell is mentioned. He suggests tapping into the experiences of patients who have undergone constant observation and nurses who have had the responsibility for watching to discover factors that make the experience reassuring for some patients and distressing for others.
