Health care staff often fail to recognise depression & other suicide risk factors in older people. Ageism may play a part in this oversight. By listening to older people & learning to recognise the warning signs, nurses can identify & treat the underlying problem, perhaps preventing the often fatal consequences. (7 refs.)
